Lost World of Tambun

The climbing vicinity is located inside the premises of the Sunway Waterpark at Tambun. It was developed during the Mammut/Camp 5 expedition in February 2007, and currently features about 40 routes, ranging from 4a to 9c (still project).

Getting there

Coming from Singapore, the drive up is about 8 hours, via the North-South Highway. A favourite rest-stop would be at “Jejantas”, where plenty of eating outlets and fast food restaurants are available for our pick. A&W is a favourite, for Singaporeans suffering from withdrawal ever since the outlet went extinct locally several years ago. You may wish to plan your arrival time as well, since some accommodations charge extra for after-hours check-in.

Accommodation

Affordable and convenient accommodation can be found in the form of Sun Inns Hotel, which is only a 5-minute drive away from the Waterpark. If you are travelling in a big group, consider booking the 15-bed dormitory which will cost you only RM300 a night. Small groups can choose to go for the Family room (4 persons in a room), which costs RM110 a night.

The Climbing

As enticing as it sounds to wake up at the break of dawn for the majestic limestone cliffs that lies in wait, do note that the Waterpark only opens at 11 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends. Hence, feel free to take this as an excuse to catch a few more hours of sleep.

Entrance to the Waterpark is at RM25 for adults, and do make sure to specify that you are here to climb, as the gate out to the climbing site has to be opened by the authorities. Routes range from 8m boulder projects to 55m multi-pitch climbs; most in general are about 30m, so it would be ideal to bring along at least a 70m rope for your trip.

Stock up on a few maillons (and be prepared to leave it there) as some may have been removed from the anchors. Also, expect to combat spiders, spider webs, and be on the look out for monkey crap, all part and parcel of the outdoor climbing experience :)
