Tampin Bouldering

These boulder fields were discovered by a Malaysian - Brandon Loong in 2004. They were largely shielded from view by the jungle. The boulders were discovered only when the land was cleared for palm plantations.

The boulders are granite, ranging in size from a metre across to a few storeys high! Friction varies from rough to downright finger shredding – depending on the size and shape of the quartz crystals. There are thousands of  boulders strewn over several square kilometers so driving there is a necessity. Most of the boulder fields are on private land – either palm or rubber plantations. This place is potentially a world class site for bouldering….if access issues can be resolved and if enough climbers establish new problems and new areas actively.

Climbing here is relatively new. There isn’t established ethics or relationship with the land owners. We are compiling topos and keeping track of “who-did-what-when” so if you think you discovered a new place/boulder or new problem, pls drop us a note. In the meantime, climb with care and common sense. Do not upset local sentiments by leaving trash, trampling on fences/plantations, parking indiscriminately or wearing the too little.

How to get there

The only realistic way to get here is to drive. The boulder fields are a good 20km from the nearest town (Tampin) and local buses or taxis are not reliable. Plus, you need to drive from one area to the other. From the North-South highway, exit at Tampin and follow directions to head to Tampin town. At the main runabout in Tampin town, head towards Gemas. After driving for about 10 km along N1 (the old road that links Johor to KL), you will start to see boulders scattered on the left and right side of the road. Refer to the map below for specific access to the various sites.
